PARADISE IN EXILE

In 1953, Alfonso Candela is a likeable, privileged man in Santiago de Cuba. However, the Cuban Revolution forces his family to splinter and go into exile. The Candelas must reinvent their lives in an alien land. But when Castro finally opens the gates of Mariel, Alfonso returns, intent on seeking redemption. In the historical saga "A Cuban in Paradise," Antonio Guernica aims to capture the essence of the Cuban Revolution through one family’s eyes as they reflect on a life that could have been and the generation that must create a new paradise in exile. 4 p.m. Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. KEEN EYE

In 1925, Murdock Pemberton — a newspaper reporter, Broadway publicist, playwright and poet with no formal training in art — was named the New Yorker’s first art critic. However, his keen eye and distinct style was sought out by modernists as diverse as Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keeffe and more. These cherished his friendship and support; so did cutting-edge art dealers and pioneers of industrial design. After discovering Pemberton’s archives in 2009, his granddaughter Sally Pemberton produced this illustrated scrapbook "Portrait of Murdock Pemberton: The New Yorker’s First Art Critic." 8 p.m. Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Details: (305) 442-4408 or www.booksandbooks.com.
