DECODING THE SHINING

   Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s thriller novel "The Shining" has developed a considerable cult of devotees claiming to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s "Room 237" fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic. 6:45 p.m. Additional screenings through April 28. STARBUCK

   The Coral Gables Art Cinema screens "Starbuck," starring Patrick Huard, nominated for a Genie Award for his role in the comedy, as a 42-year old lovable but perpetual screw-up who finally decides to take control of his life. A habitual sperm donor in his youth, he discovers that he is the biological father of 533 children, 142 of whom are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of the prolific donor, code-named Starbuck. FILM FESTIVAL

   The 15th annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival features 65 films from 15 different countries including feature-length movies and short films that chronicle the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender communities. The opening night film "G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend)" by Darren Stein tells of Tanner, a school’s first openly gay student, choosing between rising popularity and the friends he is leaving behind. 8:30 p.m. Additional films through May 5.    In "The Shining" aspiring novelist Jack Torrance accepts a position as the off-season custodian at an elegant but eerie hotel so he can write undisturbed.    The Miami Jazz Society screens "Argo," telling of the hostage situation in the American embassy in Iran; and "Life of Pi," winner of four Academy Awards and based on Yann Martel’s novel by the same name.
