THEATER

Thursday 12/20

THE NUTCRACKER
The Adrienne Arsht Center presents The House Theatre of Chicago's "The Nutcracker." Set in modern day, this holiday classic is not a ballet but rather a play about one loving family's recovery from a terrible and surprising loss. Based on the original E.T.A. Hoffmann story, the play centers on young Clara's journey to save Christmas and bring her broken family back together. 7:30 p.m. Additional performances through Dec. 30. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Carnival Studio Theater, Miami. $45. Details: (305) 949-6722 or www.arshtcenter.org.
FIVE YEARS
The Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre presents Jason Robert Brown's musical "The Last Five Years," featuring Broadway star Janet Dacal and Christopher A. Kent. The musical explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The story chronicles the young couple's romance in a new and exciting way: her story starts at the end of their relationship; his begins on the day they met. Wednesday-Saturday 8 p.m. Sunday 2 p.m. Through Dec. 30. Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables. $15-$48. Details: (305) 444-9293 or www.actorsplayhouse.org.
