TREE LIGHTING
   The 2012 Coral Gables Holiday Spectacular features live performances, food, carnival rides and games, face painting, arts and crafts, bounce houses, and more. The Actors' Playhouse Children Theater, Maria Verdeja School of the Arts, and The Jeff Kipperman Quartet from UM performs. Coral Gables mayor Jim Cason and members of the City Commission light the tree at 7 p.m. in front of Coral Gables City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way, Coral Gables. Free. JOURNALIST SERIES
   The Miami Dade College Journalism Speaker Series features Sun Sentinel features reporter and author Johnny Diaz, who shared in the 2000 coverage of the federal seizure of Elian Gonzalez while at the Miami Herald. MAM BALL
   The 2012 Miami Art Museum Ball commemorates the museum's 29 years at the Miami-Dade Cultural Center in anticipation of next year's move to Museum Park, alongside Biscayne Bay. The ball chairs are Patricia Papper, Patricia and William Kleh, and Marcella and Daniel Novela. Followed by an after party "Crash the Ball," with Brooklyn-based duo "Tanlines." 7-11 p.m. dinner. 10 p.m.-2 a.m. after party. Miami Art Museum, 101 W Flagler St., Miami. $1,000 MAM Ball.
