MUSIC DIALOGUE
Festival Miami hosts master class "A Conversation with Leon Fleisher." Fleisher is a renowned pianist, conductor and 2012 Stamps Distinguished Visitor. He talks with Frost research professor Frank Cooper about his approaches to music, teaching and learning new works, what he feels are the most important basic lessons for young musicians, and his studies with the legendary Artur Schnabel, recording with George Szell, and his struggle with focal hand dystonia at the height of his career. 7 p.m. UM Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables. OPENING NIGHT
Festival Miami opens with a concert featuring Leon Fleisher conducting the Frost Symphony Orchestra. The program ranges from Ludwig von Beethoven's "Coriolan Overture," based on a tragic tale of Roman conquest, to Sergei Rachmaninoff's sweeping "Symphony No. 2," evocative of the composer's flight from his Russian homeland. The concert also features contest winner Anastasiya Naplekova, a current Frost School of Music student, who plays Beethoven's "Fourth Concerto." 8 p.m. UM Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables. $25-$65.
