BICYCLE COUNTRY
   New Theatre presents the last play of the 2011-2012 season, "A Bicycle Country" by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz. The play tells of three Cuban exiles and their journey across the Caribbean Sea, while examining the universal themes of freedom and oppression, hope and survival. Thurs-Sat 8 p.m. Sat. 1 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on June 17 and 24. Performances through June 24. FALSE PROMISES
   The Miami Lyric Opera presents Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." The opera tells of Lieutenant Pinkerton, an American Navy Officer who opportunistically engages a marriage broker in Japan to find him a wife. He falls in love with a 15-year-old Geisha, Butterfly, converts her to Christianity and banishes the girl's relatives from her life. Pinkerton departs and falsely promises to return. In the meantime, Butterfly has a child she names Trouble, meaning "joy.' Three years have passed when Pinkerton returns to Nagasaki with his American wife. Pinkerton realizes the damage done to Butterfly but it is too late as she takes her life. 8 p.m. Saturday June 23. 4 p.m. Sunday June 24.
