BRAND DIAGNOSIS: Miami-based IVAX Diagnostics Inc. has changed its name to ERBA Diagnostics Inc., the company said Tuesday. The name change was approved by stockholders to reflex the relationship the firm has with its majority stockholder, ERB Diagnostics Mannheim GmbH, a multi-national company in the business of vitro diagnostics. ERBA Diagnostics Inc. manufactures and distributes diagnostic reagents, test kits and instruments (primarily for autoimmune and infectious diseases) through three subsidiaries: Diamedix Corp. and ImmunoVision Inc. in the US and Delta Biologicals S.r.l. in Europe.

PEDIATRIC EXCELLENCE: The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Miami Children’s Hospital has won a gold Beacon award for excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. The award is the organization’s highest recognition for excellence in unit performance and patient outcomes, the hospital said. "This recognition demonstrates the commitment of our outstanding staff in advancing care excellence and optimal outcomes," said Jackie Gonzalez, the hospital’s senior vice president and chief nursing officer. The hospital said the unit is one of three pediatric apheresis blood treatment centers in Florida for children who require plasma exchange, red cell exchange, prosorba column, leukopheresis or stem-cell harvesting.

DESIGNING DADE: To make the county more cohesive, the county commission’s Infrastructure & Land Use Committee last week endorsed a move to create a task force to create design criteria for Miami-Dade. According to county documents, "a greater focus on urban design and an increased sensitivity to compatibility with neighboring structures and surrounding environment could maintain or even improve property values." Each county commissioner would appoint a task force member, with commissioners from Districts 9, 10 and 11 appointing representatives from a Community Zoning Appeals Board. The taskforce would have 180 days to report back to the commission, which is to hear the item July 3.

SMARTPHONE HEAVEN: Miami International Airport’s website just got more accessible. It has been optimized for viewing on smart phones and other mobile devices, the airport announced. Travelers using web-enabled mobile devices who visit Miami International’s homepage at www.miami-airport.com will find specifically designed pages with a format that makes it easier to find flight and airline information. Download speeds are faster, officials said, and new pages will automatically load when users visit the website with a mobile device. The mobile site was developed by FlightView in cooperation with the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department.
