MUPPET MAKER

   "Being Elmo" introduces Muppet Elmo’s creator, Kevin Clash. As an average teenager growing up in Baltimore in the 1970s, Mr. Clash had very different aspirations from his classmates: he wanted to be part of Jim Henson’s team of Muppeteers. With a supportive family behind him, he made those dreams come true. SHOCK VALUE

   The Bill Cosford Cinema opens its "Shock Me, Shock Me: A Cinema of Transgression" film series, probing into provocative films that address taboo subjects. "Sleeping Beauty" tells of a young university student, Lucy, is possessed by a kind of radical passivity. One day, she answers an ad in the student newspaper and interviews for a job to be a lingerie waitress. However, she is secretly being initiated into a world of strange new work; one where she will have to give into absolute submission to her clients by being sedated and becoming a literal sleeping beauty. After many incidents, she finally develops the will to break the spell by discovering what happens to her while she sleeps. 9 p.m. Additional screenings through Dec. 18. ALTERNATE REALITIES

   "Women of the 6th Floor" tells of bourgeois and work-absorbed Jean-Louis who cohabits peacefully with his neurotic socialite wife Suzanne while their children are away at boarding school. The couple’s world changes upon hiring a Spanish maid, Maria. Through Maria, Jean-Louis is introduced to an alternate reality just a few floors up on the building’s sixth floor, the servants’ quarters. He befriends a group of sassy Spanish maids, refugees of the Franco regime, who teach him there’s more to life than work. 7 p.m. Additional screenings through Dec. 18. BALLET IN CINEMA

   "The Nutcracker" screens as performed by the Royal Ballet in London. The classic tale of a magician with secrets, an enchanted gift, a battle with the Mouse King, a guiding angel and a visit through the "Land of Snow" to the "Kingdom of Sweets" is beautifully executed in this ballet. FRIENDLY FOES

   Drama "Amigo" is tells of friendship, betrayal, romance and violence within the untold history of the Philippines. The film is the 17th feature film from Academy Award-nominated writer-director John Sayles, starring Filipino actor Joel Torre as Rafael, a village mayor caught in the murderous crossfire of the Philippine-American War. When US troops occupy his village, Rafael comes under pressure from a tough officer to help the Americans in their hunt for Filipino guerrilla fighters. But Rafael’s brother is the head of the local guerrillas, and considers anyone who cooperates with the Americans to be a traitor.    Miami Tower, Sky Lounge, Miami Jazz Society and Community Cultural Discovery Exchange present the 2011 Downtown Jazz Series Miami Tower Film Series, featuring free films. "Wizard of Oz" is the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto, who are caught in a tornado’s path and end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz, who everyone says can help her return home. Additionally, "The Wiz," a contemporary adaptation of the "Wizard of Oz," screens. 5-6 p.m. reception with free food platter, cash bar and snacks. 6 p.m. Wizard of Oz. 8:15 p.m. The Wiz.
