JAZZ ROOTS
   The Adrienne Arsht Center presents "Jazz Roots: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series —Down in New Orleans," celebrating the city's musical and cultural contributions, featuring a line up of some of the best artistic talent New Orleans has to offer. Grammy- and Billboard-Award winning trumpeter/composer/bandleader Irvin Mayfield brings the distinctive jazz sounds to Miami when he leads his Grammy Award-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The 20-piece orchestra was awarded a 2010 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble for its critically-acclaimed recording "Book One." Throughout the evening the ochestra and a New Orleans' favorite, trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, perform a lively exploration of jazz. 8 p.m. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Knight Concert Hall, Miami. $25-$130. SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
   The FIU School of Music presents Orchestral Masterworks Series: "Messiah." The FIU Symphony Orchestra and Choirs, under the direction of Grzegorz Nowak, present guitarists Rafael Padron and Federico Musgrove in a performance of Catelnuovo-Tedesco Concerto for two guitars, followed by the annual performance of Handel's "Messiah." BRASIL SERIES
   The Brasil Classical Series and The Miami Symphony Orchestra showcase talented musicians of the Youth Orchestra of Bahia. Led by conductor Eduardo Marturet and featuring acclaimed Brazilian pianist Simone Leitão, the concert features a selection of works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Zequinha de Abreu, Francisco Mignone, Lorenzo Fernandez and Prokoviev, among others. This unique fusion of Brazilian-inspired rhythms and melodies also includes the North American premiere of "Real and Imaginary Dances Suite" by Latin Grammy-nominated composer and instrumentalist, Andre Mehmari. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Knight Concert Hall, Miami. $20-$60. THE NUTCRACKER
   The FIU School of Music and FIU Theatre collaborate to present this unique version of "The Nutcracker," adapted and directed by Philip Church, featuring the Amernet String Quartet. CHILDREN'S CHORUS
   The Miami Children's Chorus holds its holiday concert "Voice of Angels." Audiences have the opportunity to witness the artistry and purpose of all three Miami Children's Chorus ensembles as they perform holiday favorites. Musical selections span a range of genres and represent many cultures as the choir aims to depict the cultural diversity of South Florida. 4 p.m. First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, 536 Coral Way, Coral Gables. $5 seniors and students. $20 others.
