THEATER

Thursday 2/24

DOUBLE DIP
University of Miami theater students perform two alternating shows in February: "Lysistrata" and "Big Love." "Lysistrata," Aristophanes' 2,000-year-old-play, proves that the battle of the sexes was alive and well as far back as Ancient Greece. See how fast a war in its 21st year with Sparta comes to an end after weary wives barricade themselves in the Acropolis, declaring to their warrior husbands that there shall be no lovemaking until the fighting has ceased. And in "Big Love," based on Aeschylus' classic tragedy "The Suppliant Women," 50 brides rebel against their arranged marriages. The shockingly funny play touches on age-old themes like justice, revenge and the enduring power of love. Times vary. Ends Feb. 27. Jerry Herman Ring Theatre at the University of Miami, 1312 Miller Drive, Coral Gables. $16-$25. Details: (305) 284-3355 or www.miami.edu/ring.
FAMOUSLY VOLATILE
In "Zero Hour," a naïve reporter attempts an interview with the famously volatile actor Mostel, setting off an explosion of memories, laughs, anger and juicy behind-the-scenes tales. Mostel is best known for his role as Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof." 8 p.m. Wednesday-Friday. 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday. 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Ends Feb. 27. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St., Aventura. $36. Details: (954) 462-0222 or www.aventuracenter.org.
