THEATER Thursday 3/11 CLASS CONFLICTFlorida International University Theatre rounds out its 2009-2010 season with Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard." The play centers on a Russian family that faces the threat of losing its home and treasured cherry orchard in light of financial woes and changing societal views of the upper and lower classes. All actors are Florida International University students with the exception of Regis, a little dog that plays the part of Governess Carlotta's pet. DARING LOVE STORY Pop opera "Miss Saigon" comes to Coral Gables, centering on the love story of an American soldier and a Vietnamese woman who struggle to find each other after being separated during the fall of Saigon in the Vietnam War. 8 p.m. Wednesday-Friday. 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. 2 p.m. Sunday. ADULTS ONLY GableStage at the Biltmore presents Sarah Kane's "Blasted," touted as "one of the most controversial plays ever produced in South Florida." Set over a short period in a pricey hotel room, "Blasted" depicts racy scenes involving rape, torture and other acts of violence in the midst of a civil war. The play was Ms. Kane's first work. Her praised pieces number few, as the English playwright committed suicide at a young age. Contains profanity, full-frontal nudity, explicit sexual activity and graphic violence. No one under 17 admitted. 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays. GableStage at the Biltmore, 1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables. $37.50-$45. Details: (305) 445-1119 or www.gablestage.org. UNSPEAKABLE ACTS "Equus," written by Tony Award-winning playwright Peter Shaffer, comes to Coral Gables. The play, which graced Broadway's stages in 2008, is the strange tale of a 17-year-old stable boy and a psychiatrist who attempts to dissect the sexual and religious mystery that led the boy to commit a shocking act. Mr. Shaffer was inspired to write the tale after hearing about a crime involving a 17-year-old and sought to create a fictional account of what might have prompted the incident. Contains cigarette smoking, nudity and other adult content. 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. 1 p.m. Sunday. Additional performances at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 21 and 28. Ends April 4.
