THEATER Thursday 9/17 BATTLE OF THE SEXESThe New Theatre opens its season with William Shakespeare's comedy "The Taming of The Shrew." This classic battle-of-the-sexes play is the tale of a shrewish woman and her strong-willed husband, both wreaking havoc on the conventions of courtship and marriage. Ends Sept. 27. A TASTE OF AMERICANA The University of Miami's Jerry Herman Ring Theater presents "Smokey Joe's Café: The Music of Leiber and Stoller." The play, which was a hit on Broadway, follows the work of songwriters and producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who are partially credited with popularizing rock "n' roll. Ends Sept. 19. Thursday 9/24 FAMILY SECRETSFlorida International University Theatre kicks off its 2009-2010 season with a performance of "Sonia Flew." The story follows a Cuban woman who harbors a lifelong resentment of her parents but begins to understand their actions when her son signs up for the Marines after the Sept. 11 tragedy. Ends Oct. 4.
