Pop art

   An opening reception will be held for the Beings in the Showcase exhibition by Cuban-American artist Rodrigo de la Luz. The showcase includes paintings and sculptures made of glass, metal and other materials. Mr. de la Luz will give a poetry reading. Gallery night

Jazz concert

SPECIAL EVENT

Colin Powell talks

   Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will answer questions from a moderator or panel in a videoconferencing event at Miami Dade College. The event will help start the Youth-Civic-Engagement Initiative program at MDC’s Wolfson Campus. Friday. 6:30 p.m. at Wolfson Campus, ETCOTA Auditorium, Building 7, 300 NE Second Ave., Miami. Free.

THEATER

"Rígoletto’

   Giuseppe Verdi’s tragic opera comes to life in Miami Lyric Opera’s production of "Rigoletto." Saturday and July 26. 8 p.m. at Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach. $25-$30.

Theater festival

   The International Hispanic Theatre Festival presents new plays such as "The Coleman Family’s Omission," a story about an eccentric family written and directed by Claudio Tolcachir. Returning play

   "TomFoolery" returns after 11 years at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre with musical selections such as "The Masochism Tango," and "The Vatican Ring," by Tom Lehrer. The play opens Wednesday (7/11) and runs through Sept. 2. Various times at 280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables. $15-$46.
