Children's Trust CEO Modesto Abety follows 'calling' to carve out dedicated career in Miami social services
In recognition of the fact that the needs of children in Miami-Dade County far exceeded the resources and support systems available, county residents in a voter referendum in 2002 created the Children's Trust as a dedicated source of funding.
With a budget of $70 million, a 33-member board of directors and a staff of 64, the trust engages in a comprehensive needs assessment and funding process, investing in early intervention and prevention services for children and their families. It does so with a strong emphasis on active partnerships.
Heading the endeavor is Modesto Abety, 55, for years a leading advocate on behalf of children and families in South Florida whose public service spans more than a quarter-century including roles as director of Miami-Dade County's Community Action Agency and Head Start program, special projects officer for community development and community organizer and social worker with various organizations and agencies serving poor, aged and distressed families.
Mr. Abety was interviewed by Miami Today international editor Michael Hayes.
