Carol Berns helps kids and their families cope with tragedy as co-founder, director of Children's Bereavement Center

When Miami Today and Conrad Miami in June kicked off their joint monthly Reflections in Excellence series honoring non-profit groups here, the recognition put a spotlight on a unique endeavor - the Children's Bereavement Center in Miami. The center's mission is to provide support in a safe environment where young children, teens and their families and caretakers grieving the death of a loved one can share their experiences and start to heal.
That mission was made more poignant by the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina, evoking memories of Hurricane Andrew.
The role of the center and its leaders' aspirations were detailed in an interview by Miami Today international editor Michael Hayes with its co-founder and program director, Carol Berns.
