Maria I. Nardi on Thursday was appointed director of the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, effective Aug. 1, by Mayor Carlos Giménez.
Ms. Nardi currently is deputy director of the department. Previously she was responsible for its Planning, Design and Construction Excellence Division and park stewardship operations.
Ms. Nardi has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Miami and a master’s in landscape architecture from Harvard University. She will replace George Navarrete.
Ms. Nardi thanked family, friends and colleagues at Thursday’s county commission meeting. “I follow excellent leaders,” she said, and recognized the entire “parks family.” Ms. Nardi said she’s a “parks kid. Parks have always been an integral part of my life. Parks are the places where communities come together. We are happy and healthy kids; a safe haven for the most vulnerable in our communities.”
Commissioner Dennis Moss said he sees Ms. Nardi everywhere. “I know good things are continue to happen in our parks department,” he said. Commissioner Jean Monestime said he appreciates the energy Ms. Nardi brings to the department, along with prior directors. “The best is yet to come.”
