Effort fails to index county’s living wage to cost of living

Miami-Dade commissioner have deferred indefinitely an item to increase the county’s living wage to meet the updated Consumer Price Index and the cost of living in the county, fearing it could adversely affect residents and add an additional cost burden to the county.
“We’ve had a living wage ordinance since but hadn’t been adjusting it according to the Consumer Price Index,” Commissioner Jean Monestime said when his item was recommended for approval at the most recent Government Operations Committee meeting. “When all is said and done, it will adjust to 21 cents per employee when it becomes effective. The employers still have the opportunity to either pay health insurance or to allow them to get the full living wage if they don’t,” Mr. Monestime said. “We recently adjusted the ordinance in 2015, so this is just an additional adjustment to make it whole.” …To read the full story click here
